Direct observations of a complex coronal web driving highly structured slow solar wind

چکیده
Abstract The solar wind consists of continuous streams charged particles that escape into the heliosphere from Sun, and is split fast slow components, with emerging interiors coronal holes. Near ecliptic plane, low-latitude holes interspersed a highly structured wind, source regions drivers which are poorly understood. Here we report extreme-ultraviolet observations reveal spatially complex web magnetized plasma structures persistently interact reconnect in middle corona. Coronagraphic white-light images show concurrent emergence over these structures. With advanced global magnetohydrodynamics models, demonstrate observed direct imprint magnetic separatrix (S-web). By revealing dynamic portion S-web, our open window important middle-coronal processes appear to play key role driving wind.

متن کاملCoronal Heating versus Solar Wind Acceleration
Parker’s initial insights from 1958 provided a key causal link between the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind. However, we still do not know what fraction of the solar wind’s mass, momentum, and energy flux is driven by Parker-type gas pressure gradients, and what fraction is driven by, e.g., wave-particle interactions or turbulence. SOHO has been pivotal in brin...
متن کاملSolar Wind Forecasting with Coronal Holes
An empirical model for forecasting solar wind speed related geomagnetic events is presented here. The model is based on the estimated location and size of solar coronal holes. This method differs from models that are based on photospheric magnetograms (e.g., Wang-Sheeley model) to estimate the open field line configuration. Rather than requiring the use of a full magnetic synoptic map, the meth...
متن کاملCoronal Holes and the Solar Wind
Coronal holes are the darkest regions of the ultraviolet and X-ray Sun, both on the disk and above the limb. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. This paper reviews measurements of the plasma properties of coronal holes and how these measurements have been used to put constraints on theoretical models of coro...
متن کاملOn the Slow Solar Wind
A theory for the origin of the slow solar wind is described. Recent papers have demonstrated that magnetic flux moves across coronal holes as a result of the interplay between the differential rotation of the photosphere and the non-radial expansion of the solar wind in more rigidly rotating coronal holes. This flux will be deposited at low latitudes and should reconnect with closed magnetic lo...
